Why Slowing Down Is Your Superpower
Published: October 2025
In our always-on world, the sacred art of rest has become a radical act of self-care. Yet so many of us feel guilty for slowing down, as if our worth depends on constant productivity.
What if I told you that rest isn’t laziness—it’s essential medicine for your mind, body, and soul?
This month, I’m exploring the theme of Restorative Sleep & Rest, and I want to invite you on this journey with me. Because true rest allows your nervous system to repair, your creativity to flourish, and your inner wisdom to emerge.
Why Rest Matters More Than You Think

We live in a culture that glorifies busyness. “Hustle culture” tells us that rest is something we have to earn, a reward for pushing ourselves to exhaustion. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Rest is not a luxury. It’s a biological necessity.
Here’s what happens when you prioritize rest:
🔹 Your nervous system shifts from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest
When you’re constantly on the go, your body stays in a state of high alert. Rest signals to your nervous system that you’re safe, allowing your body to move into healing mode.
🔹 You improve emotional regulation and reduce anxiety
Without adequate rest, your amygdala (the brain’s emotional center) becomes hyperactive, making you more reactive to stress. Rest helps you respond to life’s challenges with clarity rather than panic.
🔹 Your brain clears metabolic waste
During deep rest and sleep, your brain’s glymphatic system flushes out toxins that accumulate during waking hours. Think of it as your brain taking out the rubbish.
🔹 Your body repairs and restores itself
Rest is when your body releases growth hormone for cellular repair, consolidates memories, and strengthens your immune system.
The Science Behind Restorative Rest
Research shows that chronic sleep deprivation and lack of rest contribute to anxiety, depression, weakened immunity, and even cognitive decline. Your brain literally needs downtime to process emotions, consolidate learning, and prepare for the next day.
But here’s what many people don’t realize: rest isn’t just about sleep.
Rest is also about:
- Mental rest (giving your mind permission to stop problem-solving)
- Emotional rest (releasing the need to please everyone)
- Sensory rest (stepping away from screens and noise)
- Creative rest (allowing space for inspiration without forcing it)
- Social rest (choosing solitude when you need it)
Creating Sacred Rest in Your Daily Life
You don’t need a week-long vacation or a spa retreat to experience restorative rest. Small, intentional moments throughout your day can create profound shifts in your well-being.
Here are some practices I recommend to my clients:
Morning Stillness
Before you reach for your phone, give yourself 5 minutes of quiet. Sit on the edge of your bed, take some deep breaths, and simply notice how your body feels. This sets a calm tone for your entire day.
Afternoon Pause
Take a 10-minute rest break in the afternoon. Lie down with your legs elevated, close your eyes, and let your body soften. This micro-rest can prevent the 3 pm energy crash and reduce stress hormones.
Digital Sunset
Create a tech-free hour before bedtime. The blue light from screens disrupts melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep. Use this time for gentle stretching, reading, or meditation instead.
Evening Wind-Down Ritual
Develop a consistent bedtime routine that signals to your body it’s time to rest. This might include dimming lights, sipping herbal tea, journaling, or practising gentle yoga.
Weekend Retreat
Designate one morning each weekend for complete rest—no agenda, no productivity, just being. Give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing.
My Journey Into Deep Rest: The Vipassana Experience

As I write this, I’m preparing for something that feels both exciting and daunting: a 10-day Vipassana Meditation Course starting October 1st.
For ten days, I’ll be sitting in complete silence, without phones, books, writing materials, or any distractions. Just me, my breath, and whatever arises in the stillness.
This feels like the ultimate practice of rest—not physical rest, but the deep mental and emotional rest that comes from finally giving my mind permission to be still.
I’ll be honest: the thought of it is both liberating and terrifying. What will I discover in all that silence? What emotions will surface when I’m unable to distract myself? What will happen when my racing mind has nowhere to run?
But I know from working with my clients that the most profound healing often happens when we stop running and finally allow ourselves to rest into the present moment.
I’m discovering what happens when we step completely away from the noise, demands, and distractions of daily life. It’s challenging, uncomfortable at times, and yet deeply restorative in ways I’m only beginning to understand.
When I return, I’ll be sharing my full experience and insights in a special blog post. I look forward to sharing what this journey reveals about rest, healing, and reconnecting with ourselves.
Supporting Our Community While We Rest
While I’m immersed in this journey of inner work, I’m also committed to supporting two incredible Milton Keynes charities that do vital work in our community: Samuel’s Charity and Al’s Pals.
My motivation is simple: to help them continue the great work they do for those who need it most. If you feel moved to support these local causes, any contribution—no matter how small—makes a real difference.
Because rest and community care go hand in hand. When we’re rested, we have more capacity to support others. And when we support our community, we create a ripple effect of healing.
Your Invitation to Rest
I want to leave you with a challenge this week:
Choose one moment each day to practice sacred rest.
It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It could be:
- Three deep breaths before you start your workday
- Five minutes lying on the floor with your legs up the wall
- Sitting in your car for a few moments before going inside
- Watching the sunset without your phone
As you practice, pay attention to what happens in your body and mind. You might encounter resistance—that voice that says you’re wasting time or being lazy. That’s just your conditioning talking.
The truth is: Rest is productive. Rest is where healing happens. Rest is how you come back to yourself.
Journal Prompts for Reflection
- How does my body feel when I truly rest? What sensations do I notice?
- What resistance do I experience around slowing down? Where does that belief come from?
- What permission do I need to give myself to rest without guilt?
- If rest were sacred in my life, what would change?
