How does hypnosis work? To answer this, the first thing to understand is that hypnosis is a natural state of trance experienced by all of us just before falling asleep or when we are in deep concentration or focus.

Your unconscious is at the core of you. It is where your beliefs and values reside, and these are the control centres of your behaviours. Many of these were created when you were a child, before the age of 10 and often younger.

Did you ever experience sitting in the classroom and going into a daydream? You still somehow knew when to speak and were able to answer questions. Or have you been driving along a road and suddenly become aware of your surroundings, thinking you may have missed your turning because you had fallen asleep (highway hypnosis). This is due to your unconscious operating and keeping you safe while your consciousness was being quiet for a moment.

Emotions are linked to thoughts that have been saved and stored in the unconscious. If you are in control of all your thoughts and actions, why do you continue to have reactions and behaviours that are not helpful?

The answer is that the unconscious has created a way of letting you believe that it is keeping you safe.
